The People of the Fields
By Gina Garcia-Smith
By Gina Garcia-Smith
In this society all are equal and all are free.
The land is as green as the water lilies that float peacefully in the tranquil lake
The air is filled with the thick scents of sweet jasmine and orange blossoms
All around I see even rows of orchards, the scent of dirt and hard work rising from the earth
The land is love: giving and expecting nothing in return
People move through the rows of trees, picking and tilling and gathering.
They have dark dirt under their nails and leathery skin touched by the sun
They are worker bees moving constantly, thinking of others before themselves
They are a community of many who create a world that nurtures all,
Giving thanks to the Earth, the Water and the Sun.
